Skiing Salt Lake

Storm ends today, sun returns Tuesday

No resort is open for skiing today, and there is no lift to ride yet in Utah. The storm that built the early base is ending this morning at Alta, with snow likely before 11 a.m. and then mostly cloudy skies. The one thing to know is that today is a clearing day. Sun returns Tuesday, before the next light snow arrives Tuesday night.

What changed

The Winter Weather Advisory was updated early this morning and remains in effect until 11 a.m. today. The National Weather Service calls for additional snow of 2 to 4 inches in the Wasatch Mountains south of I-80, with winds gusting as high as 45 mph. Ski Utah said this morning that the storm is starting to wind down and exit the region, after impressive water totals and decent snowfall at the highest elevations. No opening dates changed in this check.

Conditions

At Alta, snow is likely before 11 a.m. today, with a high near 31 degrees and temperatures falling to around 28 this afternoon. The point forecast calls for less than half an inch of new snow today, with northwest wind at 2 to 13 mph. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 20. Tuesday looks mostly sunny with a high near 38. Snow is likely again Tuesday night into Wednesday, with 1 to 2 inches possible each period and a Wednesday high near 31. Thursday turns mostly sunny again with a high near 36.

Roads

The advisory warns that winter driving conditions are expected this morning, and the Weather Service advises drivers to slow down and use caution. No specific traction restriction for SR-210 in Little Cottonwood Canyon or SR-190 in Big Cottonwood Canyon was confirmed in this check. If you drive either canyon this morning, carry proper winter tires or traction devices and check UDOT Cottonwood Canyons updates before you leave.

Today’s call

Do not plan on lift served skiing today, because nothing is open. Use the clear day Tuesday to finish your preseason checks, tune your skis, and watch Brian Head as it aims to open first on Friday, November 6. If you head into the backcountry, check the Utah Avalanche Center first, because new snow and gusty winds can leave unstable snow even as the storm clears.
