LCC vs BCC: Which Canyon, Which Day

LCC and BCC share a mouth in Cottonwood Heights and then split into two different days. LCC is steeper, snowier, slower access. BCC is wider, mellower, easier logistics. Pick on weather, traffic, and who you are skiing with.

Who LCC Is For / Who BCC Is For

LCC (Alta + Snowbird) is for powder priority, steeper terrain, fewer groomer laps, you own a traction-device car and can leave at 6:30a without negotiation.

BCC (Brighton + Solitude) is for families, first-timers, intermediate progression, night skiing, trees you can actually learn in, parking that does not feel like a lottery ticket until 9a.

Not for: If you want to park at 9:30a on a Saturday powder day in either canyon with a 2WD and no plan, neither canyon will work.

What Makes Them Different

Same storm track, different shape.

LCC: narrower, avalanche closure risk, 2 resorts that ski like 1 big one if you know the gates, 1200 inch average at top, longer sustained fall line (3,240 feet Snowbird). Traffic is traction enforcement plus road work plus everyone leaving Cottonwood Heights at the same time.

BCC: wider U, 2 resorts that ski totally different, 500 inch base, more intermediate bowls, better tree learning, night skiing at Brighton, Honeycomb at Solitude for the LCC-style reward without LCC gates.

Key number: LCC holds snow 1 to 2 days longer after storm, BCC holds parking 45 mins longer on a weekend.

Best Kind of Day For Each

• Bluebird after 8 plus inches overnight: LCC. Alta first bell, Snowbird Mineral Basin for soft leftovers. Leave driveway 6:45a max.
• Bluebird hardpack with no new snow: BCC. Brighton Crest trees still edgeable, Solitude bowls groomed out wide. You can leave at 7:15a.
• Active storm, whiteout, windy: BCC. Less interlodge, lower road elevation, you will actually get up the canyon. Solitude skis better in low vis than Alta high traverse.
• Family, never-ever plus 1 intermediate plus 1 advanced: BCC every time. Brighton.
• You want to ski 3 to 4 hours then work: BCC. Easier exit by 10:30a.

How To Start Your Day

LCC, 6:45a check:

1. UDOT Cottonwood Canyons @UDOT_Cottonwood plus UDOT Traffic app, LCC Open or Closed or Chain law
2. Alta Snow Report plus Snowbird Snow Report, overnight total at lodge vs mountain (Alta 10,580 vs 8,530 tells you wind)
3. Decide by 6:50a. If chain law plus 2WD, you are not driving LCC. Take UTA 994 LCC.

BCC, 7:00a check:

1. Same UDOT feed, BCC closes less than LCC, but Guardsman shut means Solitude and Brighton share same jam
2. Brighton report for night skiing grooming carryover, Solitude for Honeycomb gate opening time
3. Decide by 7:10a. If BCC is red on traffic and you wanted Brighton, UTA 972.

Zones By Level (Both Canyons Viewed Together)

Beginner:

LCC: Alta Sunnyside, Snowbird Chickadee, but LCC worst beginner access. You will walk, you will be cold, limited terrain. 2 out of 10 unless someone in group insisted.

BCC: Brighton Explorer plus Snake Creek beginner trees, Solitude Moonbeam, 9 out of 10. This is where SLC learns to turn.

Intermediate:

LCC: Alta Sugarloaf and Supreme groomers, Snowbird Gad Valley, great if you are athletic intermediate willing to handle traverses.

BCC: Brighton Crest Express all day, Solitude Apex plus Powderhorn II, widest, most forgiving intermediate in Wasatch. 9 out of 10.

Advanced:

LCC: Alta High Rustler, Gunsight to Greeley, Snowbird Cirque, Gad 2 trees. 10 out of 10 on pow, 9 out of 10 on hardpack.

BCC: Brighton Milly Bowl plus Snake Creek chutes, Solitude Headwall plus Honeycomb (gate check). 8 out of 10 pow, 8 out of 10 everyday.

Where People Waste Energy / Get In Trouble

• Chasing LCC on every pow day with no exit plan: Interlodge runs 45 mins to 3 hrs. If you stayed for last tram, you sat in LCC exit 90 mins. BCC would have given you 6 runs by noon.
• Splitting canyons in one day: You lose 90 mins. Pick one.
• Brighton at 10a on Saturday thinking you get front row: Lot full 8:15 to 8:45 powder Sat, 9:30 regular Sat. Solitude shares same road, same backup.
• Alta without knowing traverses: Albion to Collins to Wildcat burns first hour if you do not know why you are there. Have a first 3 lifts mapped night before.
• Not checking canyon closure vs resort open: Resorts spin lifts closed? No. Road closed? Same result. Check road first.

Parking, Arrival, Timing Strategy

LCC:

Leave Cottonwood Heights 6:30 to 6:45a for first chair, 6:15a on 12 plus inch Sat. Lot 1 at Alta full 7:30 to 8:00a weekends, Snowbird entries stack to bypass. Paid parking at both, reservation windows, check alta.com and snowbird.com same night. UTA 994 LCC from 6200 S Wasatch Blvd, 40 min ride, actually beats parking stress 80 percent of Saturdays.

BCC:

Leave 6:45 to 7:15a regular, 6:15 to 6:30a powder Sat. Brighton lot small, Solitude slightly larger but shared road. Brighton night skiing 9p, you can work, then ski 4 to 9p and avoid morning entirely. UTA 972 BCC from same hub, most reliable BCC move if you do not have 4WD with snow tires.

Exit rule: If you do not ski LCC, aim to descend by 10:30a weekend to avoid uphill backups. BCC, 1:00p is still okay except powder days.

Gear + Etiquette

• Traction: 4WD or AWD plus 3PMSF snow tires beats chains in LCC enforcement. They do turn you around.
• In car: shovel, extra layer, snacks for Interlodge.
• On hill: LCC traverses are one-way valves, do not stop in middle of High T or traverse back in front of 10 people.
• BCC: Brighton is where SLC learns to turn, do not rip Explorer at 5pm on a Saturday. Solitude Honeycomb, close gates mean close.
• No resort money in this guide. We do not take it.

Quick Verdict

Best for most locals most days: BCC for volume and learning, LCC for storm.

If you have 10 days this winter and want the memorable one: LCC on the first bluebird after a 10 plus inch. If you have 40 days and a family: BCC gets you 30 of those without a meltdown.
