Skiing Salt Lake covers the six ski resorts closest to Salt Lake City: Alta and Snowbird in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Brighton and Solitude in Big Cottonwood Canyon, and Park City Mountain and Deer Valley on the far side of Parleys Summit.
There are two things here. The daily report says what the snow, weather and roads look like this morning and what that means for where to ski. The guides cover what doesn’t change from day to day: how each mountain is laid out, how the canyons work, parking, the bus and passes.
How the report is made
The report is put together automatically early each morning from public sources:
- National Weather Service, Salt Lake City, for the forecast, warnings and the forecasters’ discussion
- SNOTEL snow sensors at Snowbird, Brighton, Mill-D North and Thaynes Canyon, for measured snow depth
- Utah Avalanche Center, for the day’s avalanche danger rating
- UDOT, for canyon road status and traction-law restrictions
- Each resort’s own snow report, for new snow, base depth and lifts
Nobody from this site is standing at the snow stake at 5am. Every number comes from the people who measure it, and the report links to them. If a resort hasn’t posted its numbers yet, the report says so instead of guessing. Where the report and a source disagree, the source is right.
What it isn’t
It isn’t a backcountry forecast. For anything outside a resort boundary, read the Utah Avalanche Center forecast in full.
It also doesn’t replace checking the road before you drive. UDOT closes and reopens the canyons on short notice, and its road status page is the only place that is current.
Independence
The site isn’t affiliated with any resort, pass or agency, and nobody pays to be covered.
